Lewis Henry Hawkins, 70, resided in Buffalo, New York passed on April 27, 2016, at the Mansfield OhioHealth Hospital after a brief battle with lung cancer. Lewis was born October 25, 1945 in Mansfield, Ohio. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School and was a talented athlete who played football, baseball and basketball. Lewis worked for the City of Buffalo and was self-employed as a cement mason and concrete finisher. Lewis was also a community leader in his younger days, he addressed Mansfield City Council for a community center for the youth and they agreed to build the Friendly House. He leaves to cherished memories to his wife: Willa Hawkins of Buffalo, NY; 5 daughters: Amy D. Chess from Chicago, IL, Denise L. Hawkins, Felicia A. Saunders, Veronica (Ricky) Stamps, and Ramona (Benjamin) Hawkins-Davis all from Columbus, OH; 1 son: Lewis "Muki" Hawkins Jr. from Buffalo, NY; sister: Deloris "Jean" Hawkins, brother: Robert (Sherry) Winston both from Mansfield, OH.; 3 stepchildren: Lori Brown, Maurice Brown both from Buffalo, NY, Manning (Areo) Brown from Massillon, OH. Lewis had 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Preceded in death by his grandparents: Doc Graham and Lula Mae (Hall) Graham from Greenville, AL; father: Henry Frank Hawkins from Opps, AL; mother/stepfather: Gertrude H. (Willie) Winston; sister: Rosalee Geter; brothers: Edward Hawkins, Harold Hawkins, Riley Hawkins; special aunt/uncle: Ethel (Robert) Mathews Jr. all from Mansfield, OH; and grandson: Anthony "Fatz" Sowers II from Columbus, OH. Calling hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016, at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, ltd, 1106 Park Ave. East, Mansfield with funeral services at 12:00 noon. Repass will take place at 395 Buffalo Street, Mansfield, Ohio 44902 immediately following the funeral service. Burial will follow at Mansfield Cemetery.
