Helen Likes Obituary

Helen M. Likes, 85 of Mansfield passed away peacefully Mon. Aug. 14th at her youngest daughter's home. Helen was born Aug. 15, 1931 in Portsmouth, OH to Leo E. and Fern Platt Lyons. Helen graduated from St. Mary High School in Portsmouth, OH. Helen retired from Tracy & Avery Co. in the Advertisement Dept. before her marriage to Roger, on April 4, 1959. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Helen was a dedicated, strong willed individual person who was a loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as to her friends and community where she proudly served on the PTA and fought fiercely for a better education. She was always involved with her children and grandchildren throughout their school years and helped raise her great-grandson, CJ who was her shadow in the evenings. Helen enjoyed the yearly family Easter trips to St. Petersburg, FL to visit Sam & T, gardening in her flower beds, decorating her home for all the holidays, especially Halloween. She loved being able to talk to her dear friends on the phone upon hours at a time up till she could no longer hear as she aged and she really missed that! Helen also enjoyed bowling at Park Lanes with her bowling league "Powder Puff" team that she would do while the kids were in school. Dad would give mom a break from cooking every Fri. and Sat. by ordering Deschner's Pizza for the family and their children's neighborhood friends as they always came to the LIKES home. Helen enjoyed spending various activities with her children and grandchildren, playing bingo, and going on casino trips with her husband, Roger, in Las Vegas as well as Columbus, OH when she was no longer able to travel long distance. She enjoyed the occasional trips with Roger's family aboard the Mississippi Queen River Boat. Helen loved having family congregate at the "Likes Home" throughout the years. Her daughter, Carol took over the family Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners that Helen and Roger both looked forward to "taking the break of not cooking" over the past 20 years and was proud to use mom's original roasting pan that she handed down to her. Helen, along with her late husband Roger, were able to return to their original home in April of 2016 where they started their marriage 58 years ago by living with their youngest daughter, Susan who was their primary caregiver. Helen is survived by her two sons, Mark (Deb) Likes and Scott Likes of Mansfield, OH and her three daughters; Cheryl (Bill) Clark of Greenwich, OH, Carol (Dave) Robertson of Shiloh, OH and Susan Likes Reed of Mansfield. OH. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Likes, who recently passed away May 8th of this year. Parents; Leo & Fern Platt Lyons, four sisters; Alma Jean Cole, Katherine Montavon, Lucille Jones and Mary Ann Karbula and their spouses along with her great-grandson, Khyrhyn James. The siblings and family members of Susan would like to THANK HER for all her selfless, dedicated, long hours, lost sleep and relentless care giving she provided to both our parents for many years without being asked to. Words alone cannot express the gratitude and love for giving up so much of your life for the wonderful care you provide. You should feel proud that you were able to keep your promise to mom and dad by keeping them out of a nursing home and being cared for at home. For this, dear SusanWE THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.
