Alan L. “Sonny” Brinegar, age 75 of Mansfield, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born on October 11, 1949, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, to the late Leroy and Elsa (Kiser) Brinegar, and on January 31, 1971, he married the love of his life, Lucy (Collins).
Sonny retired from Hospira, but before that, he worked for the Mansfield News Journal as a delivery driver and also for Peabody Barnes. He attended Avenue Church for many years, and he was an avid woodworker who could build anything from a doghouse to a barn. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, mowing his grass and working with his hands, and he was truly a jack of all trades. He could draw and paint, do plumbing and electrical work, and fix anything that was broken.
He will be remembered as a larger-than-life man with a big heart. He was kind and forgiving, and he never knew a stranger. He would drop everything to help someone in need. His family was everything to him, and he enjoyed his trips home to Kentucky to visit his relatives there as well as spending time doing anything and everything with his family here in Ohio. He adored his great-grandson. Above all else, he loved the Lord.
He is survived by his wife Lucy Brinegar; his daughters Tammy (Brian) Armstrong and Carmen (Rodney Holsinger) Armstrong; his siblings Michael (Mindi) Brinegar and Debbie Bowman; his grandchildren Johnathon Armstrong, Alexis (Tom) Layer, Jennifer (Matt) Bright, and Abigail (Brandon Nemtuda) Armstrong; his great-grandson Jameson Bright; his special nephew Joseph Hermel; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who were more like siblings.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Elsa Brinegar; his brother Leroy Brinegar; his special aunts Sylvia Reynolds and Kay Kiser; and many more beloved extended family members.
A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held at a later date at Avenue Church.
Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield, is honored to be assisting the family with arrangements.
