Charles R. Hay, 84, of Mansfield, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 20, 2022.
Charles was born on June 25, 1937, in Grayson, KY, to Herbert A. and Pheobe E. (Barker) Hay. He retired from AK Steele. He married Joyce Geneva Hay on February 5, 1977, and they spent almost 40 wonderful years together until she passed away on November 19, 2016. More than anything else, he loved God and his family, and enjoyed many large gatherings, celebrations, and all the conversations. He loved bluegrass gospel music, playing the guitar, and singing at church. He was always asked to sing “The Old Man is Dead” song. Charles also would end every prayer with “God bless my kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids”. He loved animals, and was always feeding the birds and deer, even though some neighbors weren’t thrilled. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He couldn’t wait until his wife, Joy, would fry the fish that he caught. Some of his favorite foods were biscuits and gravy that his daughters made him, and hot dogs with coney sauce. He spent a lot of time in the rocking chair at his daughter, Robin’s back porch. He enjoyed the company of her dogs and would check out (and help himself) to Robin’s garden.
He is survived by his children, Robin Hay Owens, Judy (Ray) Fultz, Ronnie (Arlene) Davis and Mark (Laura) Davis; ten grandchildren, Ronnie C. Owens, Dylan J. Owens, Regina Moore, Julie Mays, Janet Elswick, Michael Davis, Jessica Bullock, Erica Davis, Jamie Peterson, and Chrissy Davis; 20 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife, Joy, Charles was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy Davis; grandson, Joshua Owens; siblings, Thelma Dickison, Inez Ketchesin, Clarence Hay, Orville Hay, Alfred Hay Jr, Lawrence Hay, and John Hay; and his trustworthy Boston Terrier, Bandit.
Calling hours will be from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, ltd., 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield, OH. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Earl Tackett officiating. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
