David Bates Obituary

David Edward Bates, 71, born in Norton VA, moved to Mansfield OH at the age of 2, went home to be with the Lord on May 27, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.

Born on April 2, 1954, to Daniel and Frances Bates, David lived a life dedicated to his faith, his family, and his community. David was married to the love of his life, Deborah (Ramey) Bates, for 53 beautiful years. Together, they built a strong, faith-filled family and life of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Frances Bates, and his infant brother, Daniel Bates.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Deb Bates; his loving children, Ginger (James) Baldinger, Matthew (Tara) Bates, and April (Jim) Zeno. David’s legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Austin, Tyler, Alex, Hannah, Garrett, Alexis, Nathan, Emmett, Beckett, and Tobias; his sister, Jane (Steve) Schwartz.

David’s passion for life extended beyond his family. In his younger years, he had a love for speed, racing sprint cars (car #22) and go-karts (car #29). He also enjoyed playing in church softball leagues and was an avid deer hunter, often finding peace and joy in the woods.

David’s life was marked by unwavering faith. He grew up in church and lived as a faithful servant of the Lord throughout his life. He served in many capacities: as a church bus driver, a youth leader who led countless adventures, and a Sunday School teacher for all ages. He eventually answered the call to preach, and for the past 35 years, he served as the beloved Pastor of Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Galion OH.

Throughout his ministry, David touched countless lives. He officiated over 100 funerals and more than 60 marriages, always offering comfort, wisdom, and the love of Christ. He had a heart of gold and was known for being present in people’s lives during their greatest times of need.

In 2017, by God’s grace, David received a liver transplant that extended his time with his family and church. He continued to serve, even while undergoing dialysis for the past five years, never allowing illness to dampen his spirit or his dedication.

David Bates fought the good fight and finished his race with honor. He is now healed and whole, walking in Heaven with Jesus and reunited with the loved ones who went before him. His memory, ministry, and love will live on in the many lives he touched.
