Dwaine “Dean” Smith, my dearest husband and our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, has departed peacefully on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, to his Heavenly Home. His heart of this world may have failed him, but his spirit was stubbornly strong.
Dwaine was born on February 21, 1931, in Butler, to Carl S. and Florence I. (Oswalt) Smith. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Dwaine was stationed in Germany with the 14th armored tank division, with the rank of Corporal. He married the love of his life, Shirley M. (Bell) Smith, on August 17, 1951. He retired from General Motors after 37 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith; children, Randall D. (Diana) Smith and Laurie D. (Jerry) Botdorf both of Mansfield, and Kathy L. (Gregg) Darling of Colorado; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and of course we cannot forget his faithful K-9 companion and his shadow, Abbey, who will greatly miss him.
Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wendell Smith and Donovan Smith; and grandson, Benjamin Smith.
Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, ltd, 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor James Berry officiating. Burial will be at Windsor Cemetery, with Military Honors performed by the R.C.
