Helen Shoemaker Obituary

Helen (Snyder) Baker Shoemaker, 89, of Ashland, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Helen was born on October 4, 1934, in Portsmouth, to Elbert and Virginia (Dressler) Snyder. She married Charles H. Baker in 1954, and he preceded her in death in 1980. She was a member of Community Bible.

“My brother, Brad Baker and I (Darcy Baker) lost our mom today. If you knew her, you know that heaven just gained another angel.  If you didn’t know her, I’m sorry you missed out, she was an amazing woman!  She had an unwavering faith in God, like no one I’ve ever met!  She raised us to be the same way and we can only hope to be half the person that she was!  She never had an impressive job title, or a college degree and by her own choice, she didn’t graduate high school.  She didn’t have a lot of money or fancy material things, but what she did have were long lasting, meaningful relationships with friends, family and God.  We’re going to miss her terribly, she was the matriarch of our family and the last of her generation on both sides of our family.  Mom, tell everyone in heaven we said hello and we love them, we’ll be there with you someday.”

She is survived by Darcy (Crystal) Baker and Bradley Baker, both of Ashland; step-son, Larry E. Shoemaker of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Kimberly Ransom, Bradley Baker, Dayna Marie Baker, Andrew (Brooke) Porter, and Breanna  (Mason) Birkbeck; great-grandchildren, Bradley, Beverly, Chase, and Emery; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Charles Baker; second husband Larry Shoemaker; son, Charles Baker; siblings, William “Bill” Snyder, Albert Snyder Jr, Martha Hoyt, and Rosanna Radcliffe; and step-daughter, Beverly Jo Shoemaker-Taylor.
