James "Jim" Patterson, age 71, of Mansfield, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, due to complications related to Parkinson’s disease. He was surrounded by several family members. His death comes just four months after the death of his wife of nearly 49 years, Lynn.
Jim was born January 8, 1953, in Portland, Oregon. The family moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1956. Jim attended Columbus West High School. While at West High School, he was the senior class president, named in Whose Who’s in American high schools, and a member of the national honor society. He was also the band’s drum major for 3 years, which marched in the 1969 Rose Bowl Parade. Jim was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Jim graduated from Purdue University in 1975 with a degree in chemical engineering. While at Purdue, he was president of the local chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He then continued his education and earned a MBA degree from the University of Dayton. After graduation, Jim went to work at Ashland Chemical in Columbus, Ohio. His success led to multiple promotions, moving to St. Louis, Seattle, and then back to Columbus. After leaving Ashland Chemical, he worked several years at Rubbermaid in Wooster, Ohio.
Jim is survived by: daughter, Karin; son, Andrew; brothers, Tom (Lisa) and Ray (Leanna); grandchildren, Hunter, Taylor, Dakota and Peyton; great grandchildren, Elijah and Reign; nephew, David Patterson; and niece, Kerry Pohl. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
