John S. Shifflet, 93, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2019, surrounded by his family.
John was born on October 14, 1926, in Wilksville, Ohio, to Theodore R. and Margaret (Freeman) Shifflet. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during both WWII and the Korean War, as a parachutist. He married Alice Herbst in 1946 and they were married for 65 years, prior to her passing in 2012. He retired from General Motors after 32 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 549 and enjoyed bowling and working outside.
He is survived by five children, Walt (Sharry) Shifflet of Mansfield, Donnie (Vicky) Shifflet of Huron, Linda (Jim) Townsend of Bellville, Chris (Mike) Perry of Ashland, and Lori Gore of Mansfield; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Thomas (Beverly) Shifflet of Glouster, Robert (Susan) Shifflet of Mansfield, and Margie Adams and Kathleen Reiner both of Columbus.
Along with his wife, Alice, John was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Mark Willison; five brothers, James Shifflet, Sylvester Shifflet, Theodore Shifflet, David Shifflet and Joseph Shifflet; and four sisters, Mary Jane Jennis, Helen Hadaway, Naomi Skinner, and Edna Shifflet.
Memorial services will be at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2020, at Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church, 998 Laver Rd, Mansfield, Ohio, with Pastor Mark Bailey officiating. Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, ltd, 1106 Park Ave. East, Mansfield, is assisting the family with arrangements.
