Major James "Goldy" Goldsmith Obituary

Major James “Goldy” J. Goldsmith, 96, of Mansfield, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Goldy was born November 6, 1927, in Mansfield to Forest R. and Eva (Ackerman) Goldsmith. On January 13, 1958, he married the love of his life, Joan (Hildebrand) Goldsmith, and she survives. He proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. Goldy retired as a Major from the Mansfield Police Department after 30 years of service. He started, implemented, and worked for 13 years in the security department at Richland Bank and drove school bus for 25 years for Mansfield City Schools. Goldy was a member of First United Methodist Church, a 75-year member of FOP#32 William J. Taylor Lodge, and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Goldy liked to boat at Pleasant Hill and Lake Erie, enjoyed taking vacations and doing yardwork, and was an avid bowler and golfer.

Along with his wife of 66 years, Joan, Goldy is survived by three children, Carol Williams of Mansfield, Michael (Jenifer) Goldsmith of Shiloh, and Lisa Zimmerman (John Achevich) of Columbus; one daughter-in-law, Judy Goldsmith of Mansfield; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Shane) Fox, Jared (Kate) Goldsmith, Lindsey (Jerry) Holden, Natalie (Steven) Knazek, Whitney (Vince) Fanello, Sylvia Goldsmith, and Alex Goldsmith; sixteen greatgrandchildren; and his beloved cat, Taffy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruth Moore; one son, James Goldsmith; and one son-in-law, James Williams.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

A special “Thanks” to the staff at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital and Hospice for their wonderful care of Goldy.
