Phyllis A. (Helcher) Stout Black, 80, of Mansfield, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021
Phyllis was born on July 1, 1940, in Crestline, to Raymond Helcher and Dorothy (Long) Helcher Mehl. She enjoyed watching game shows, gardening, crossword puzzles and playing cards, but above all, she loved children.
She was a caring presence in the lives of her children and was “Mom” to all the neighborhood kids, feeding them and providing a safe place to stay, anytime, day or night. She gave unconditional love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thoughtful and funny, she was a best friend and outstanding mother to many. Through struggle after struggle she was strong in ways we can only hope to be and we are lucky to have called her our Mom.
She is survived by her children, Corey Black and Trent (Beth) Black, both of Columbus, and Tamara (Andy) Rex of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Jason Stout, Jennifer Stout, Mackenzie Black, Nathan Black and Sophia Black; and her great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thurman Black; and son, Brad Stout.
A memorial gathering for family and close friends will be held at a later date.
Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, ltd, 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield is handling the arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
